HOUSING YOUR DUCKS

Housing can be very simple. Ducks will happily live with hens, though it is important they are kept from having hens’ droppings fall on them. You need a wider door if you keep ducks – they race for the exit, and since they waddle, they can hurt themselves.

They also need a ramp, because they cannot manage steps or ladders.

Like hens, they need a nest box arrangement so they can lay, which they do in the morning, before 9 a.m. (ish). I don’t let them out until after this so they don’t lay all over the garden.

If you want to confine them to a run, then this is possible. Captive ducks rarely fly, and a fence about four feet high – just over a metre – is adequate.

The house should be roomy and well-ventilated, and have especially good access for clearing away bedding and poo. Duck poo is wetter and smellier than hen poo, and could do with being cleaned more regularly.
